The literacy crisis

Many articles and media reports are talking about low standards of literacy in Australia.

  • Since 2000, the academic performance of Australian students has declined in literacy skills when compared to other OECD countries. From a ranking of 4th in 2000 to 14th in 2017.
  • Our declining literacy levels were highlighted in a 2013 OECD survey that found that almost 44 per cent of 15 – 74-year-old Australians, were below-proficiency level.
  • 47%of Tasmanians are functionally illiterate according to a Guardian article

  • In a World Atlas ranking of literacy rates. Australia ranked 99% behind 26 other countries incl: Uzbekistan, Cuba & Barbados
